Library

The Winslow High School Library/Media Center prides itself on being a true research center. The print collection consists of over 11,000 books, of which 1,400 are reference materials. The existing art and literature collection is particularly outstanding. All materials are indexed on a computerized catalog system which can be accessed throughout the school. Items that are not readily available in the library can be obtained through a worldwide interlibrary loan program.

To complement the print collection, the library offers Internet access, talking books, videos, periodicals and vertical file materials. A multimedia encyclopedia and other educational software, including SIRS (Social Issues Resource Service), Discovering Authors (criticism), ROTH 20th Century Poetry (poetry and criticism), and NoveList (a reader’s advisory program) are offered on the latest computer technology. The Electric Library program is an electronic reader’s guide, which indexes hundreds of different periodicals, newspapers (including the Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald), books, transcripts and photos and also comes with home access.

The atmosphere is a friendly one, which makes the library a particularly inviting place to work. Teachers collaborate with the librarian and bring classes in to work on a wide range of assignments. Even though the skills taught here transfer to the college experience, many alumni find themselves coming back to utilize this library’s wealth of resources.
